Some people have a habit of backbiting and seem unable to live without it. You may have encountered such individuals in your life. They exist everywhere in the world and enjoy talking about others behind their backs and it becomes their daily entertainment. Sometimes, they even make up stories about someone and enjoy sharing them with like-minded people. But why do they do it?
Below are some reasons based on my experience:
Jealousy
Some people backbite out of jealousy. They cannot digest your progress or the success you have achieved. They may resent the privileges you have that they do not, and instead of working to improve themselves, they try to bring you down. This behavior is especially common in corporate environments, where everyone wants to grow, but some choose unhealthy shortcuts.
Social Status
Some people backbite to position themselves as superior to others. They struggle to accept praise given to someone else and try to prove that they are better in comparison. This often happens in social settings where individuals brag about themselves, their families, or their children to establish superiority.
Proving Themselves Right
Some people backbite because they want to prove they are right. If there has been an argument or disagreement, they attempt to justify their actions by portraying the other person as wrong. You may have experienced this within your social circle, among friends, or in the workplace.
For Fun
Some people do it simply for entertainment. When they have nothing meaningful to discuss, they pick a person and talk about them for hours. It may sound surprising, but this happens quite often.
